'Watching Arokodare and Adams' - Afcon winner says Osimhen still searching for ideal strike partner
Published: October 12, 2025
2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner Brown Ideye has said that the Super Eagles are still in search of a perfect attacking partner for star striker Victor Osimhen, following Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Lesotho.
Osimhen, who has been Nigeria’s most consistent goal threat in recent years, started the game alongside Tolu Arokodare, before being paired with Akor Adams, who came off the bench to score the team’s second goal.
Speaking on the Super Eagles’ forward options, Ideye said that despite the depth in attack, the chemistry between Osimhen and his partners is still developing.
"Osimhen for sure needs someone to play with him. Watching Tolu in the first half and Akor in the few minutes that he played, we are still looking for the balance for the partnership between anyone of them and Osimhen," Ideye said Akpeyi said in a SuperSport broadcast monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com.
The former West Bromwich Albion striker, who struck a formidable partnership with Emmanuel Emenike during Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON triumph, also commented on a nervy defensive moment involving goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and the defenders.
“That was bad communication from Nwabali. And it happened again, imagine that ball went in.
"The ball was going on slowly and I was screaming no. Thank God that they didn't equalize," he said.
Ideye will hope that head coach Eric Chelle will find the right attacking combination ahead of Nigeria’s next World Cup qualifier against Benin on Tuesday.
The Super Eagles currently sit third in Group C, and must beat Benin while hoping South Africa fail to win against Rwanda to keep their qualification hopes alive.
