Nigeria v Benin: Three hurdles the Super Eagles must overcome to keep World Cup dream alive
Published: October 13, 2025
Nigeria's Super Eagles are set for a high-stakes encounter against Benin’s Cheetahs on Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in a decisive Group C clash of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Sitting third on 14 points, behind Benin (17) and South Africa (15), Nigeria needs a two-goal victory and a South African slip-up against Rwanda to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Despite the home advantage and fervent fan support, several challenges threaten to derail Nigeria’s campaign.
First, the absence of key players is a major concern. Star forward Ademola Lookman, a creative force in recent matches, is suspended after picking up two yellow cards.
His absence leaves a critical gap in the attacking third. Additionally, wing-back Ola Aina remains sidelined with an injury, weakening the right flank and exposing Nigeria’s defensive transitions.
Second, Nigeria’s inconsistency and defensive vulnerabilities could be exploited by the Cheetahs.
The Eagles have drawn five of their nine matches, including unexpected stalemates against lower-ranked opponents such as Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
Defensive lapses, own goals, and late-game errors have contributed to these dropped points.
Captain William Troost-Ekong’s occasional errors underline a backline that has conceded eight goals, and the immense pressure of a must-win home game could compromise composure.
Finally, Benin arrives as a well-organized and resilient side under former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr.
The Cheetahs have climbed to the top of the group with five wins, including a historic 2-1 triumph over Nigeria in June 2024.
Conceding only seven goals and boasting recent form of four wins in six, Benin requires just a draw to secure qualification.
Rohr’s tactical acumen, combined with the threat of talisman Steve Mounie, could neutralize Nigeria’s stars, including Victor Osimhen.
While Nigeria’s talent pool offers hope, the combination of player shortages, inconsistent performances, and a shrewd opponent presents formidable hurdles.
A miracle in Uyo remains possible, but the Super Eagles must overcome these challenges to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
