'The only team that beat Nigeria' - Benin captain Mounie eyes another goal against Super Eagles
Published: October 13, 2025
Benin captain Steve Mounie has set his sights on scoring against Nigeria when both teams meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
The powerful striker netted in the first leg to inspire the Cheetahs to a historic 2-1 victory over the Super Eagles, Nigeria's only defeat in the ongoing qualification campaign.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Mounie expressed confidence that Benin can replicate their previous success against Nigeria, insisting his side is fully prepared to claim another important win in Uyo.
"I didn't even notice the statistics. It shows that we have our chance tomorrow (on Tuesday)," Mounie told reporters during a press conference.
"If we are the only team that beat Nigeria, I guess we are the only team that beats them again. Actually, we will take our chances tomorrow and get this qualification."
Mounie, who fired blanks in Benin's 1-0 win over Rwanda last Friday, added that he is hoping to rediscover his scoring form against the Super Eagles.
"I thought about that earlier. Maybe I didn't score against Rwanda to score against Nigeria tomorrow (on Tuesday) that's what I hope for," he said.
The clash in Uyo is a decisive one for both teams, as it will determine their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Nigeria, currently sitting third in Group C, must win by at least a two-goal margin and hope South Africa fail to secure victory in their final game to book a spot at the global showpiece.
Benin, on the other hand, sit top of the group and only need to avoid defeat at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
