Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe has apologised to Nigerians following the team’s failure to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying directly for the tournament were affected by their 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The result ended the Super Falcons’ hopes of progressing further in the continental competition and means they must now go through the play-offs for another route to the World Cup.
Ucheibe acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the team’s failure to secure direct qualification but insisted that the players are already focused on their next challenge.
“We’re just going to focus on the next game. For the playoffs, we will do our best to ensure that we qualify for the World Cup," she told reporters in the mixed zone.
The midfielder also apologised to Nigerians for the setback, admitting that the team understands the disappointment caused by failing to qualify directly for the tournament.
“We are so sorry. We want to apologize to you guys. We know this is the first time we are not qualifying for the World Cup directly. We just want to say we are sorry, she said.
Ucheibe further assured supporters that the Super Falcons remain determined to secure their place at the 2027 World Cup despite having to take the longer route.
“We promise to do our best in the next game for us to be able to qualify for the World Cup in 2027," she concluded.
The Super Falcons will face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in a crucial 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying play-off on Thursday, August 13, in Casablanca, Morocco.
The winner will advance to the intercontinental play-off tournament for a chance to secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
