Why Okereke opted to stay in Italy as Benevento confirm signing of ex-Olympic Eagles star

Through a statement on their official website, Italian Serie B club Benevento Calcio have confirmed the signing of former Olympic Eagles forward David Okereke.

The ex-Nigeria U23 star has signed a contract that will keep him at the Giallorossi until June 30, 2028, with an automatic club option for the 2028-2029 season.

Major League Soccer, Belgian and Turkish teams had been monitoring the situation of Okereke before he accepted an offer from Benevento Calcio.

Allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report with certainty that Okereke decided to remain in Italy for family reasons, despite interest from clubs abroad.

The 28-year-old lives in Italy with his Italian girlfriend, with whom he has a young child.

Okereke transferred to Benevento as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with relegated Serie A team Cremonese.

The versatile forward has made 70 appearances in Italy's second tier, registering 12 goals and 11 assists.

Benevento is the seventh Italian club of Okereke's career, following previous spells with Lavagnese, Spezia, Cosenza, Venezia, Cremonese and Torino.

The 2019 Super Eagles invitee has also played for Club Brugge in Belgium and Gaziantep in Turkey.
