Blackburn Rovers forward Dapo Afolayan has revealed that representing Nigeria remains one of his biggest ambitions and has admitted that he was close to earning a call-up to the Super Eagles in the past.
Afolayan was in a rich vein of form before the September/October international break, having registered four goal involvements in his last two appearances in the Championship.
His impressive displays have not gone unnoticed as the winger has been nominated for the Championship Player of the Month.
Bristol City fullback Rio Cardines, Millwall striker Lyndon Dykes and West Ham United defender Konstantinos Mavropanos are also contenders for the award.
Afolayan visited the Super Eagles at their team hotel during the 2025 Unity Cup in London, where he met with players and coaching staff, strengthening ties with the national team setup.
The former St. Pauli star was asked what would complete his football journey and what his ultimate goal is.
He told Blackburn's YouTube channel: "I'd love to play for Nigeria. It's alaways been something I wanted to do since I was a kid. I've been really close and timing has been unfortunate in a few cases.
"I was really playing well in the Bundesliga, and I was really close to a call-up, and then I stopped playing before the March break, and I ended up not going. It's just one of those things that has not come to pass."
