Cameroon Coach Hoping To Lure Liverpool Star To National Team Ahead Of WCQ Against Nigeria
Published: December 07, 2016
Cameroon coach Hugo Broos is hoping to lure Liverpool defender Joel Matip to return to the Indomitable Lions ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria in 2017.
Born in Bochum to a German mother and a Cameroonian father, Matip has complained about the disorganization in the Cameroon setup and has not featured for the team since 2015, few months after the dismal outing in Brazil 2014.
Belgian tactician Broos is not satisfied with the performance of the central defenders after two games in World Cup qualifying, with the Lions conceding in both matches, and has turned his attention to The Reds star.
“When I took over as coach I went to see him in Gelsenkirchen and ask him to return to the team,” Broos said to Voetbal Magazine.
“But he said to me ‘nothing is organised properly in Cameroon’.
“I asked him to give me a chance to prove that we could do it better but he was not convinced.
“But in the meantime I’ve heard that he is now prepared to make a comeback and so I am going to go and see him again.”
Matip scored Cameroon’s only goal at the 2014 World Cup in a 4-1 defeat to Brazil at Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha, Brasília.
