Rohr : Ex-Germany U20 Star Akpoguma Must Decide Now If He Wants To Play For Nigeria
Published: November 20, 2017
Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr embarked on a scouting trip to Germany this past weekend.
The former sports director of Eintracht Frankfurt was among the 30,150 spectators that watched the Bundesliga clash between Hoffenheim and The Eagles at the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena (Sinsheim) on Saturday.
Rohr was happy with the performance of Nigeria Football Federation long-term target Kevin Akpoguma and is planning to hold talks with the central defender over an invitation to the national team ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
''I watched him play for Hoffenheim against Frankfurt on Saturday. Kevin is an excellent match for the players we are on the lookout for,'' Rohr told SWR.
''But he'll have to decide soon whether he wants to wear the colors of Nigeria and I'll call him in the next few days.''
When asked about Rohr's plans to cap him, Neustadt an der Weinstraße -born Akpoguma pledged loyalty to his country of birth Germany, saying : '' That honors me, of course, but I'm German, I was born here, so I should play for Germany too.''
Akpoguma has collected caps for Germany at U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 level.
