Liverpool have crashed out of the Premier League International Cup after losing 2-1 to Portuguese opponents Porto in a quarterfinal tie at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday evening.
In-form winger Bobby Adekanye started for the Reds, while ex-Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles star Musa Yahaya, wearing the number 88 jersey, was on the bench for the visitors for the entirety of the game.
Toni Gomes ought to have opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 20th minute but his header drifted over the bar after an inviting cross from Adekanye.
Just one goal separated the two sides at the break after Matthew Virtue-Thick scored following a brilliant team move.
On 58 minutes, Bruno Costa fired a shot into the roof of the net to equalize for Porto and their persistence finally paid off in the third minute of stoppage time when Santiago Irala netted the winner.
Adekanye was involved in Liverpool's three matches in the group stage against Newcastle, Sparta Prague and PSV.
Porto who are the defending champions of the Premier League International Cup will face Arsenal in the semifinal.
