Liverpool Loanee Awoniyi's Debut Woes Continue As Gent Lose To Standard Liege
Published: July 28, 2018Nigeria U23 international Taiwo Awoniyi made his competitive debut for Gent in their 3-2 loss to Standard Liege in a Belgian First Division A clash staged at Stade Maurice Dufrasne (Liège) on Friday evening.
The Liverpool loanee pulled on a Gent jersey with the number fourteen on its back when he was introduced in the 69th minute as replacement for Yuya Kubo.
Awoniyi had few training sessions with Gent ahead of Friday's match with Liverpool confirming the transfer of the Nigerian on Monday, and the striker appears not to have an in-depth knowledge of his teammates as he failed to read their passes on at least two occasions.
Gent is the fourth European club Awoniyi has debuted for and he was on the winning team only once, back in the 2017-2018 season in Royal Excel Mouscron's 2-0 win at KSC Lokeren.
On his professional debut for FSV Frankfurt against Hertha BSC, they were beaten 2-1 in 2015, the following season NEC were hammered 4-0 by PSV Eindhoven in his maiden appearance for the Nijmegen based team.
Taiwo Awoniyi wasn't the only Nigerian on parade at Stade Maurice Dufrasne, Uche Agbo put in a full shift for the home team while Gent's Anderson Esiti entered into the fray in the 46th minute.
