Tammy Abraham Still There For Nigeria's Taking As Chelsea Loanee Is Omitted From England Roster
Published: March 13, 2019
The Nigeria Football Federation have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Chelsea-owned striker Tammy Abraham after he was omitted from the latest England squad list announced on Wednesday afternoon.
In September 2017, Abraham rebuffed the
attempts of the Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick to
have him play international football for his fatherland ahead of the 2018 World Cup, and the three-time African champions have not given up on convincing the striker to switch his allegiance.
The 21-year-old played in two international friendlies for England against Germany and Brazil in November 2017 which both ended scoreless, but was not called up to the Three Lions throughout 2018.
Nothing has changed as Gareth Southgate has overlooked Abraham for England's first two 2020 European Championship qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro this month.
The Aston Villa striker would have ended speculation over his international future if he had been invited and made his competitive debut.
Abraham has been in sensational form for Aston Villa in the Championship, scoring 21 goals from 30 appearances and is in the running to be named to England U21s squad this month.
Two players of Nigerian descent no longer eligible to represent the Super Eagles, Ross Barkley (Chelsea) and Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur) are part of England's 25-man squad for the Euro qualifiers.
