Atalanta's Okoli Could Spark International Tug-Of-War Between Nigeria And Italy
Published: April 13, 2019
Born to Nigeria parents in Vicenza Italy, 17-year-old Caleb Okoli is one of the players who could spark an international tug-of-war between Nigeria and Italy.
The youngster is inching closer to making his first-team debut for Atalanta, having made the match day squad against Juventus and Cagliari Calcio in the Serie A and Coppa Italia respectively.
He has trained with the senior team on many occasions despite his young age.
Okoli is a mainstay at the back of the pitch for Atalanta's Primavera team and has played 25 games in all competitions this term.
With NFF's obvious desire to see many Nigeria-eligible players commit their future to the Super Eagles, it won't be surprising if Italy and Nigeria have to compete for Okoli's services in the nearest future.
Meanwhile, the youngster still has a long way to go before that could happen. He needs to break into Atalanta's first-team.
With Leon Balogun in his early 30, it isn't too early to start looking for his long-term replacement which Okoli could be a perfect candidate.
The Nigerian Federation must keep a close eye on him because he possesses all the characteristics needed to become a great defender.
