Does Nigeria Have A Chance With Kevin Akpoguma?
Published: April 19, 2019
Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr and his employers NFF have been following the progress of German player of Nigeria decent Kevin Akpoguma, hoping to make him pledge his international future to the Super Eagles.
Rohr's efforts to have him before the Russia 2018 World Cup were fruitless as the centre-back remained committed to his dream of featuring for his country of birth.
After the Super Eagles unceremonious ouster from the World's greatest football fiesta last year, Akpoguma revealed that he didn't ultimately turn down the chance of playing for the West African country, but he's only waiting for Germany's invitation to the senior team.
According to the defender while speaking to BBC Sports, he will consider Nigeria's approach should he fail to receive a call-up to Germany camp anytime soon.
The report definitely gave many soccer-loving Nigerians huge hope that the player could end up with the Super Eagles, but do Nigeria still have any chance of snatching Akpoguma from Joachim Löw's watch?
In truth, Rohr has a very slim chance of capturing their longtime target due to the massive reinforcement taking place in Löw's team after their dismal showing at the World Cup.
This reinforcement has seen younger players like Kai Havertz (19) and Lukas Klostermann (22) getting their chances with the European powerhouse.
Akpoguma could eventually receive his maiden call-up to the team if the manager continue in such trend.
Though his form throughout this season isn't really impressive, his performances for Hoffenheim last season was a testament of his qualities and the former World champions wouldn't want to lose such talent to Nigeria.
