'Important player' - Marseille coach warns against underestimating Lookman and Atalanta
Published: November 05, 2025
Olympique de Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has expressed caution ahead of his side’s UEFA Champions League clash with Atalanta, highlighting the threat posed by Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman.
Lookman has been a key figure for the Bergamo outfit since his arrival in the summer of 2022, earning a reputation for his pace and attacking flair.
However, the Super Eagles star has endured a slow start to the current campaign, registering just one goal in eight appearances across all competitions.
Despite the dip in form, De Zerbi remains wary of the 28-year-old’s quality and influence, insisting that Lookman remains a player capable of making the difference when Atalanta visit the Stade Vélodrome on Wednesday night.
“They've signed important players like Lookman from Paris. I don't see Atalanta as being in crisis," he was quoted as saying by the official website of Marseille.
Like Lookman, Atalanta have also endured a slow start to the season and currently sit 11th in the Serie A table.
The team’s inconsistent performances have increased pressure on head coach Ivan Juric, sparking speculation about a possible crisis within the squad.
However, speaking at his pre-match press conference, De Zerbi dismissed such claims, praising Atalanta’s overall displays and insisting their recent results do not reflect the quality of their performances.
“They have fewer points than in previous years. They're not in crisis, they played a great game against Milan. They deserved more than a draw. It's always difficult against Atalanta,” he added.
After suffering their first league defeat of the season against Udinese last weekend, Lookman will be eager to inspire Atalanta to a positive response and help the team bounce back in the Champions League.
