2019 AFCON : Former Super Eagles Skipper Charges Rohr On Good Preparation
Published: April 25, 2019
Ex-Nigeria skipper Uche Okechukwu has instructed the national team handlers to see to an adequate preparation ahead of 2019's AFCON tournament if the Super Eagles must come out victorious, particularly seeing that illustrious African teams the likes of Egypt and Senegal are also competing.
In an interview with Busybuddies, the 51-year-old who was a member of the 1994 AFCON-winning squad stressed the necessity of going to Egypt on a decent preparation though he acknowledged that Gernot Rohr's side retains the qualities needed for such competition any day.
"I think Egypt is number one as the hosts, and I think they have good players", the one-time Iwuanyanwu Nationale defender began.
"Senegal is another team that will be contenders for this Cup of Nations, and of course, Nigeria.
"There's no competition in Africa that you will write off Nigeria, no matter how bad the preparation might be, we always have that quality. And based on that, I think we have a very good quality team, but preparation is important.
"It is not just going there (Egypt) to compete, if you are thinking of bringing the cup home, you must be prepared because teams like Egypt and Senegal will be competing (for the title). Except you want to go there and compete and come back.
"We have quality players, it's a very good team, but they need to be prepared. I don't know how prepared they are for this tournament, that's the problem," he rounded off.
The NFF has put together a pre-tournament friendly with Senegal while a meeting with Morocco has also been mooted.
