Young Gun: Nigerian-Born Defender Named Arsenal Academy Strongest Player By Teammate
Published: July 15, 2020
Ibadan-born central defender Joseph Olowu has been identified as the strongest player in the Arsenal Academy.
Interviewed by the official matchday programme ahead of tonight's English Premier League meeting against Liverpool, defender Zech Medley, who is on the fringes of the first team, was asked by Aidan Small to name the strongest player around the academy, and he responded, 'Joseph Olowu'.
A key player for Arsenal U23s, Olowu would have been in contention to train with Arsenal's first team after the season restarted but he was loaned out to Cork City in the winter transfer market and the agreement was recently extended until the end of the 2020 season.
Also capable of playing as a right-back and defensive midfielder, the Nigerian has partnered Medley in central defense on a number of occasions.
Olowu was spotted by an Arsenal scout while undergoing trial with Charlton Athletic and joined the north London club at U14 level.
The 20-year-old has pledged his international future to Nigeria and visited the Flying Eagles in Poland during the U20 World Cup in Poland last year.
