PL2: Oyekunle continues his scoring run with Southampton's equaliser against Arsenal
Published: November 08, 2025
Nicholas Oyekunle continued his rich vein of form by getting on the scoresheet as Southampton came from behind to earn a point in a Premier League 2 clash on Friday, November 7.
The Southampton academy graduate made his senior debut last weekend in a Championship fixture against Preston North End, coming off the bench for the final four minutes.
Oyekunle was one of seven players of Nigerian descent in action at Staplewood Training Ground, alongside Southampton teammates Romeo Akachukwu, Abdulhalim Okunola, and Zach Awe, as well as Arsenal trio Khari Ranson, Ife Ibrahim, and Josh Nichols.
Arsenal took an early lead when Sagoe Jr made a brilliant run down the left-hand side, cut inside, and fired a precise shot into the bottom right corner in the ninth minute.
Southampton responded early in the second half, with Oyekunle rifling home into the roof of the net after being set up by Moses Sesay to level the score.
With sixteen minutes remaining, Arsenal fullback Josh Nichols came close to snatching a late winner, only to be denied by a stunning save from Southampton goalkeeper Hugo Fisher.
Oyekunle has been a consistent performer this season, having either scored or assisted in every Premier League 2 match he has played, except for the 2-1 win over Burnley.
The 18-year-old has tallied six goals and provided two assists so far.
Meanwhile, Andre Harriman-Annous was absent from U21 duties, suggesting he could be in contention for Arsenal's travelling squad to Sunderland after spending the majority of the week training with the first team.
