Nigeria, USA, Canada Battling To Get Red-Hot Toronto Wonderkid But Striker Is Undecided
Published: July 18, 2020
The international future of Toronto FC wonderkid Ayo Akinola has been the subject of debate in recent days following his brilliant start to the season, with five goals in his first two matches in the MLS is Back Tournament.
Born in Detroit, United States to Nigerian parents, Akinola qualifies to represent Nigeria, United States and Canada, where he has been for a significant period having moved to the country at the age of one.
Akinola's agent Nick Huoseh has stressed that his client is undecided about his international future.
The United States Soccer Federation, Canadian Soccer Association and the Nigerian Federation are determined to secure the services of Akinola as they have all reached out to him.
The 20-year-old has scored an incredible 36 goals for United States youth teams and is provisionally cap-tied to the Americans but can still apply for a one-time change of association.
Speaking to mlssoccer.com, Akinola's agent said : "When the time comes and he gets a call, he’ll think about it. Right now he’s focused on Toronto FC".
One of the most promising talents in America, Akinola helped the United States reach the quarterfinals of the 2017 U17 World Cup and was in contention to face the Flying Eagles at last year's FIFA U20 World Cup but withdrew from the squad due to an ankle injury.
