Luc Nilis Believes Dessers Deserves Belgium National Team Spot Ahead Of Chelsea, Palace Stars
Published: August 02, 2020
Former Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven goalscoring sensation Luc Nilis is of the opinion that Racing Genk summer acquisition Cyriel Dessers deserves a spot in the Belgium national team ahead of Chelsea's Michy Batshuayi and Crystal Palace's Christian Benteke.
Born to a Belgian father and Nigerian mother, Dessers qualifies to represent the two nations at international level.
The Nigerian Federation were thought to be in pole position for his services as he was called up for two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone in March 2020 but the matches were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The debate over the international future of the Belgian-Nigerian striker is back on again thanks to the brilliant form he has shown in pre-season, with a goal in each of his last three matches for Genk.
"I would always take you there, with all due respect for Benteke and Batshuayi, but you are more number nine than them. If you score, the national coach cannot get around you, Cyriel," Nilis told Het Belang van Limburg.
Dessers has said that his future would become clearer in the coming weeks when Super Eagles manger Gernot Rohr and his Belgian counterpart Roberto Martínez announce their rosters for the first FIFA window of the 2020-2021 season.
