Bayern's Zirkzee Committed To Netherlands Over Nigeria Despite Being Dropped From U21 Roster
Published: September 01, 2020
Bayern Munich striker Joshua Zirkzee remains committed to the Netherlands National Team despite his recent omission from the U21 squad for their upcoming European Championship qualifiers against Belarus and Norway.
The 19-year-old was initially named to the provisional squad list but KNVB coach Marcel Groninger has not included him in the final 25-man group though he called up five debutants.
With Zirkzee snubbed from the U21 squad, his hopes of traveling with the senior team for the 2020 European Championship could be a long shot.
Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has openly courted the striker to switch his allegiance from Netherlands to Nigeria, something that is feasible until he plays a cap-tying game for his country of birth.
On playing for the Dutch senior team, Zirkzee told RTV Rijnmond : "Unfortunately I am not there yet, but that is more and more. I am already proud of that, so we are taking small steps.
"Whether I think it is strange that I have not been called up for the Dutch Juniors? I have nothing to say about that. "
Zirkzee, who qualifies to play for the Super Eagles through his mother, was an unused substitute in the Champions League showpiece between Bayern Munich and PSG last month.
