'He Will Do A Good Job' - Rodgers Hints Ndidi Could Solve Leicester's Center Back Crisis
Published: September 11, 2020
Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has not ruled out the possibility of Wilfred Ndidi being deployed as a central defender in his side's English Premier League opener against West Brom on Sunday, September 13.
The Foxes are facing a defensive crisis ahead of the trip to The Hawthorns, with Johnny Evans suspended and Wes Morgan struggling with a hamstring problem, while Filip Benkovic's availability is covered in mist.
To solve this problem, Ndidi could be asked to lineup alongside Caglar Soyuncu in central defence, and it's a role the Nigerian played in the friendly against Blackburn Rovers last weekend.
Predominantly a holding midfielder, he is not new to the central
defensive position having played a similar role during his time with
Racing Genk and for the Nigeria U17 and U20 national teams in the past.
On the possibility of Ndidi playing at center back against the Baggies, Rodgers told reporters via Zoom call : "He’s one of the best midfield players in the league, that’s his position. I like to have a midfield who can play in a back three.
"He’s got the attributes, his reading of the game is very good. If I need to play him there, he will do a good job."
Ndidi has not played as a central defender since departing Racing Genk in January 2017.
