FC Midtjylland's Onyeka Celebrates Eagles Call-Up With First-Ever Goal In UCL Qualifiers
Published: October 01, 2020
FC Midtjylland central midfielder Frank Onyeka celebrated his maiden call-up to the senior Nigerian national team by scoring his first-ever goal for the Danish champions in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers on Wednesday, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The FC Ebedei product is one of seven uncapped players named by Rohr in his latest Super Eagles squad, the others being goalkeepers Mathew Yakubu and Dele Alampasu, Zaidu Sanusi, Samson Tijani, Cyriel Dessers and Chidera Ejuke.
Onyeka provided the game-winning assist - his first in the competition - as FC Midtjylland defeated Ludogorets 1-0 to progress to the third round of the Champions League qualifiers on August 26.
The Wolves have reached the group stage of the Champions League for the first time in their history after thrashing Slavia Prague 4-1 despite Peter Olayinka opening the scoring for the Czech side in the third minute.
Sory Kaba and Alexander Scholz scored for the Danish team in the 65th and 84th minute to make it 2-1 before Onyeka struck with two minutes remaining, blasting the ball into the net from a tight angle after he was fed by Dreyer.
Onyeka was in action for 450 minutes spread across six matches before opening his account in the Champions League qualifiers.
FC Midtjylland will discover their Champions League group stage opponents on Thursday, October 1 when the draw ceremony takes place at the RTS studios in Geneva, Switzerland.
