Chelsea U23 Coach Reveals His Thinking Behind Anjorin Making Full Debut In Champions League
Published: December 31, 2020Reviewing the 2020 calendar year, Chelsea U23 coach Andy Myers revealed his thinking behind one of his pupils Faustino Anjorin making his full debut for the first team in a Champions League clash against Krasnodar.
With Chelsea already through to the last sixteen of the competition and injuries to Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi, manager Frank Lampard handed the England youth international of Nigerian descent his first start in the 1-1 draw with the Russian opponents on December 8.
Anjorin's two previous appearances were off the bench in matches against Grimsby Town and Everton in the Carabao Cup and Premier League respectively, logging 42 minutes in total, whereas he was on parade for 80 minutes vs Krasnodar.
Myers has praised the Anglo-Nigerian for his work ethic and believes that led to the youngster making his full debut.
"We always have objectives to try and get players to train with the first team and be involved with them," Myers explained to Chelsea's official website.
"It’s been difficult to fulfil that this year with the pandemic but I think the opportunities we’ve had have been taken and the first team have welcomed that.
"To go one better than just training with the first team, we’ve also had a player make a full debut in Tino Anjorin, which is much deserved for his hard work this season."
Anjorin has directly participated in seven goals (5 goals, 2 assists) in seven appearances for Chelsea's youth teams in 2020-2021.
