VAR denies Lookman first Champions League goal of the season against Aubameyang's Marseille
Published: November 05, 2025
Ademola Lookman saw his goal disallowed, but Atalanta still came away with a 1-0 win over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s Marseille in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Nigerian forward thought he had given Atalanta the lead in the 69th minute after Raoul Bellanova’s low cross allowed him to tap into an empty net.
However, celebrations were short-lived as VAR intervened, ruling Lookman offside in the build-up.
Moments later, the 28-year-old was substituted by Ivan Juric in the 75th minute after another impressive but luckless display in front of goal.
Atalanta eventually broke the deadlock late on when substitute Lazar Samardzic found the net in the 89th minute, securing three vital points for the Italian side in their Champions League campaign.
The encounter featured two of Africa’s most prolific attackers, with Lookman and Aubameyang facing off for their respective clubs in a tightly contested affair.
Both had scoring chances, but it was Samardzic’s late strike that proved decisive.
Lookman and Aubameyang are set to meet again next week when Nigeria face Gabon in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff in Morocco.
The Super Eagles will be seeking victory as they aim to secure qualification for the tournament.
