Eric Chelle reveals how he manages Super Eagles frontline of Osimhen, Lookman and Boniface

Super Eagles coach Éric Sékou Chelle has spoken about managing Nigeria’s vast attacking talent and the system behind his team selection, following an impressive turnaround since he took charge in March 2025.

Under his guidance, the Super Eagles have recorded four wins and two draws from six competitive matches, collecting 14 points from a possible 18 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers — a remarkable improvement from the three points earned before his appointment.

The three-time African champions also won the Unity Cup in May, before an impressive draw in a friendly against 2018 World Cup hosts Russia the following month.

When asked how he manages the Super Eagles’ attacking riches led by Osimhen, Lookman and Boniface, Chelle told the official website of CAF : "There are at least 25 players who could play across the frontline — more than a full team. We try to manage it carefully.

"We’ve built a player-tracking system: we monitor around 80 players every week — roughly 80 matches to watch.

"Selection comes down to several criteria: first, are you playing for your club; second, are you performing; third, do you fit our tactical framework. Sometimes the tactical criterion wins."

He added: "For example, Ademola Lookman hadn’t played much for Atalanta early in the season, but I couldn’t name a squad without the African Player of the Year. He can change a game in 15 minutes."

Chelle also noted: "Picking 25 is never easy — in Nigeria it’s even harder — which is why we work so hard."

Chelle’s emphasis on structure, performance, and tactical balance has been central to Nigeria’s resurgence.

His data-driven player-tracking system ensures that every call-up is based on form and suitability, maintaining fierce competition for places within the squad.

He is expected to unveil his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs against Gabon this week.
