Snapped : Arsenal manager Arteta runs the rule over teenage Nigeria-eligible GK pre-Olympiakos
Published: March 16, 2021
Anglo-Nigerian goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is seemingly in contention to be included in Arsenal's matchday squad when they take on Olympiakos in the Europa League round of 16 second leg clash at the Emirates Stadium in London on Thursday evening.
Arsenal's official website has published pictures from Tuesday's training session and it is confirmed that first team manager Mikel Arteta ran the rule over the promising glovesman during the workout at London Colney.
Okonkwo has yet to be named in a matchday squad for the first team but he traveled with the squad for a Europa League quarterfinal second leg clash against Napoli in April 2019.
The 19-year-old is competing with Estonia international Karl Hein for one of the three goalkeeper spots against Olympiakos.
The two youngsters are below experienced duo Bernd Leno and Mathew Ryan in Arteta's pecking order, while third choice goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson has not been registered for the Europa League.
Hein got the nod over Okonkwo in six Europa League matches this season, including both legs against Benfica.
Arsenal are well placed to reach the quarterfinals of the Europa League after beating the Greek champions 3-1 in the first leg last Thursday.
