'Truly world-class goal' - 1994 AFCON winner Ekoku on Pepe's thunderbolt against West Brom
Published: May 09, 2021
Semi Ajayi has been relegated with West Brom three matches to the end of the season following their 3-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday night, a defeat that leaves them ten points of Burnley.
Goals from Emile Smith-Rowe, Nicolas Pepe and Willian saw off the Baggies to seal their fate., while Matheus Pereira, the shining light in West Brom's dismal season, pulled a goal back on 67 minutes.
Ivory Coast winger Pepe scored the pick of the goals with an unstoppable shot into the top left corner.
The former Lille star has been lauded for his goal by 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning striker Efan Ekoku, who played for Norwich City and Bournemouth among others before hanging up his boots.
Speaking during commentary on the Premier League world feed, Ekoku said : "That's unstoppable against any opposition, this is a truly world-class goal.
"Too much time for a guy with such a fantastic left foot. Bartley comes out and then decides actually not to defend, just to stand and see what Pepe can do, that's what he can do if you give him the time and the space.
"No thought about passing to a colleague, just inside the 18-yard box......"
