A Champions League debut to forget: Onyemaechi subbed in as Barcelona thrash Olympiacos
Published: October 21, 2025
Super Eagles left-back Bruno Onyemaechi had a UEFA Champions League debut to forget on Tuesday evening as Barcelona demolished Olympiacos 6-1.
The La Liga champions cruised to victory thanks to a hat-trick from Fermin Lopez, a brace from Marcus Rashford, and a goal from Lamine Yamal.
Ayoub El Kaabi netted a consolation for Olympiacos from the penalty spot early in the second half.
Onyemaechi, who joined the Greek side during the winter transfer window, was brought on eight minutes into the second half to replace Francisco Ortega.
The Nigeria international went toe-to-toe with Barcelona teenage sensation Lamine Yamal before the Spaniard was later replaced by Roony Bardghji.
Onyemaechi registered six clearances, one interception, two recoveries, and won a ground duel during his time on the pitch.
The Nigerian international has endured a slow start to the season, featuring in only two league matches so far.
The 26-year-old will be hoping to reignite his form and get his campaign back on track.
The victory lifted Barcelona to sixth place in the provisional standings with six points, while Olympiacos sit 33rd with three points.
