'What a performance' - Super Eagles star hails ex-teammate Havertz after game-winning goal for Chelsea
Published: May 30, 2021
Chelsea claimed the Champions League title at the expense of Manchester City on Saturday, with Kai Havertz's first-half goal proving the difference at the Estádio do Dragão - Porto.
In the 42nd minute, Havertz knocked the ball past Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson after an inch-perfect through ball from Mason Mount.
Of the eleven players Chelsea's German manager Thomas Tuchel picked in his starting lineup, three were born in Germany, namely defender Antonio Rudiger, Havertz and Timo Werner.
It goes without saying that Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was rooting for Chelsea to beat Manchester City in the final.
Okoye, who was born in Düsseldorf and has a German passport, knows all about the qualities Havertz possesses as they were teammates at the Bayer Leverkusen academy for five years.
In an Instagram post after the Champions League final, Havertz stated : "We won the ******* CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!! 🏆".
Replying to Havertz's post, Okoye hailed his former teammate, saying : "What a performance bro congrats 🏆".
Prior to last night's showpiece, the 21-year-old Havertz, same age as Okoye, had failed to score in nineteen appearances in the Champions League.
