Brentford Director of Football reacts to speculation linking club with Super Eagles midfielder
Published: May 31, 2021
There is a gentleman's agreement in place for FC Midtjylland midfielder Frank Onyeka to be sold in the summer transfer window after he was prevented from joining a new club last summer because the Wolves needed his services for the 2020-2021 Champions League.
The Nigeria international has been strongly linked with a move to Premier League newcomers Brentford, with 13.4 million euros being mooted as his asking price.
The Bees will become the fiftieth club to feature in the Premier League next season after sealing promotion to the top-flight this past weekend, beating Swansea City 2-0 in the promotion playoffs final.
Brentford owner Matthew Benham is also the majority shareholder of FC Midtjylland, hence there is a possibility of the London club signing players from the Superliga side as the two clubs are affiliated.
It was claimed that Brentford signing Onyeka hinged directly on whether they are promoted to the Premier League.
Brentford Director of Football, Rasmus Ankersen was contacted to comment on speculation linking Onyeka with a move to the club and he claimed there was nothing concrete at the moment.
Ankersen told Herning Folkeblad (subscription required) : "I will not comment on specific names. I would rather say more generally that it opens up some opportunities for FC Midtjylland to have a Premier League club within the family.
"But no, there are no concrete plans for a specific player here and now".
The 23-year-old Onyeka scored four goals and registered four assists in 41 matches for FC Midtjylland in 2020-2021.
