Published: June 01, 2021
Championship club Stoke City have announced their retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2020-2021 season.
The Potters have confirmed that a contract extension has been activated to retain the services of Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel, without disclosing the length of the new deal, which would keep the midfielder at the club until at least June 30, 2022.
Mikel arrived at the bet365 Stadium on a free transfer in August 2020 after mutually terminating his contract with Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner impressed in his first season at Stoke City, making 41 appearances in all competitions - 37 of which he started - and was in action for 3,381 minutes.
One of the senior and most decorated players at Stoke City, he captained the club in several games during the recently concluded season.
Apart from the aforementioned teams, Mikel lists Tianjin Jinmen Tiger, Middlesbrough and FK Lyn as his previous employers.
Meanwhile, former Golden Eaglets invitee Iffy Udanoh will report for pre-season training with Stoke City U18s in the coming weeks, with the Potters confirming that all first-year scholars have been retained for the 2021-2022 season.
