Published: June 07, 2021
Two former World Cup winners at youth level eligible to represent the Nigeria national team have been retained by English Premier League club Liverpool.
2013 U17 World Cup-winning striker with the Golden Eaglets Taiwo Awoniyi and 2017 U20 World Cup-winning winger with the Young Lions Sheyi Ojo have to report for pre-season training in the coming weeks as they have been re-engaged for next season.
Former Nigeria U23 international Awoniyi is now eligible to feature in the English top-flight as he has finally been granted a work permit, six years after his arrival at Anfield.
The Imperial Soccer Academy product spent the whole of the 2020-2021 campaign on loan at Union Berlin and previously had loan stints at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Royal Excel Mouscron, KAA Gent and Mainz 05.
The 23-year-old Ojo is back at Liverpool after a successful loan spell at Championship outfit Cardiff City, for whom he made 42 appearances while contributing five goals and seven assists over the course of the 2020-2021 campaign.
The Nigeria Football Federation target has also taken in loan spells at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham, Reims and Glasgow Rangers.
Ojo, who joined Liverpool ten years ago, has represented the first team on thirteen occasions.
