'I hope to give my best' - Ujpest midfielder reacts to maiden Nigeria call-up pre-Cameroon
Published: June 07, 2021
Ujpest hardworking midfielder Vincent Onovo has received a late call-up to the Super Eagles ahead of Tuesday evening's friendly against Cameroon at the Stadion Wiener Neustadt in Austria.
Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr is short on personnel at key positions before the second friendly against the Indomitable Lions, with Watford defender William Troost-Ekong and Paderborn left-back Jamilu Collins finding themselves in the treatment room after suffering injuries in the first of the two friendlies on Friday.
Around four weeks ago, Onovo admitted that he dreamt of playing for the Super Eagles and his wish could come true as early as tomorrow.
The 25-year-old says he is delighted to be handed a chance to play for the three-time African champions.
"I arrived at the Super Eagles camp last night, the coach Gernot Rohr called the president of Ujpest and he permitted me to join the team in Austria, " Onovo told allnigeriasoccer.com on Monday morning.
"I feel great to be here with the national team, I hope to give my best if I am fielded and make sure we get a win tomorrow against Cameroon".
Onovo, who previously had spells in Finland with Inter Turku and HJK Helsinki, helped Ujpest to win the Hungarian Cup in 2020-2021 and made 29 starts in the top-flight.
