Promising Nigeria-eligible defender makes competitive debut for Manchester United Youth
Published: August 15, 2021
Promising Nigeria-eligible defender Habeeb Ogunneye made his competitive debut for Manchester United U18s as they suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of national champions Manchester City on the opening day of the new U18 Premier League season on Saturday, August 14.
New United U18 coach Travis Binnion lined up a youthful side, containing six U16 players.
Fresh from signing a new deal at Manchester City, Dire Mebude, the younger brother of Watford-owned striker Dapo, could have given the Citizens a dream start inside ten seconds but saw his effort saved by Radek Vetek.
City did get their noses in front in the 32nd minute as Luca Barrington tapped home and Rico Lewis made it 2-0 three minutes later.
Ogunneye, who is a schoolboy, came on for his U18s debut in the 59th minute, replacing Norkett.
Manchester City killed the game as a contest with thirteen minutes left on the clock as substitute Joel Ndala netted their third goal.
Ogunneye was recently called up to an England U17 training camp and captained one of the sides in an intrasquad game on August 5.
