Confirmed: New interim coach for Iheanacho at Celtic as Brendan Rodgers steps down

With a statement on the official website, Scottish Premiership champions Celtic have confirmed that Brendan Rodgers has tendered his resignation, which the club has accepted.

The Northern Irish coach stepped down on Monday, a day after Celtic suffered a 3-1 defeat to Hearts, their third loss in five matches.

Rodgers' departure comes just months after guiding the Bhoys to their 55th Scottish Premiership title, but this campaign has fallen short of expectations, with Celtic recording only eight wins in 16 matches across all competitions.

As the club begins the search for a permanent manager, former Celtic coach Martin O'Neill and ex-player Shaun Maloney will take interim charge of the first team.

Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho reunited with Rodgers last month, signing a one-season deal with the Glasgow side after mutually parting ways with Sevilla, having previously worked together at Leicester City.

Since joining Celtic, the Super Eagles striker has found some of his form, registering three goals and an assist in eight appearances across all competitions.

The 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner missed Rodgers' final match in charge due to a hamstring injury sustained during the early stages of Celtic's Europa League victory against Sturm Graz.

Rodgers' exit is a significant blow for Iheanacho as the striker shares a close relationship with the former Leicester City manager.
