Roma end pursuit of Super Eagles striker as Chelsea No. 9 agrees move to Mourinho's team
Published: August 15, 2021
Serie A club AS Roma have ended their pursuit of Leicester City frontman Kelechi Iheanacho, if matching press reports in the English and Italian media are anything to go by.
Roma had considered turning their attention to the Super Eagles star should their bid to land Chelsea number 9 Tammy Abraham prove unsuccessful.
Now, Sky Sports is reporting that the England international has agreed a move to the team coached by Jose Mourinho and is scheduled to undergo a medical on Sunday afternoon at the Villa Stuart Clinic in Rome.
At 40 million euros, Abraham would become the most expensive acquisition in the history of Roma after the deal is completed.
Chelsea have included a buyback clause of €80million which can be triggered at the end of the 2022-2023 season.
It would have been difficult for Roma to get a deal for Iheanacho over the line as he is definitely in the plans of Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers for the new season despite the signing of prolific Zambia striker Patson Daka from Red Bull Salzburg.
In addition, the Manchester City academy product signed a new contract to keep him at the King Power Stadium until 2024 just four months ago.
Iheanacho has been involved in the two matches played by the Foxes in 2021-2022, coming off the bench in wins against Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
