Manchester City striker Sodje makes Premier League 2 debut against Liverpool
Published: August 15, 2021
Tai Sodje, nephew of former Nigeria internationals Sam and Efe Sodje, made his Premier League 2 debut for Manchester City U23s as they were held to a goalless draw by Liverpool at the Academy Ground in Merseyside on Sunday.
Sodje was one of two Nigeria-eligible teenagers involved for the champions, the other being Samuel Edozie who went the distance.
In the first half, Edozie missed a golden opportunity to give the visitors the lead when he fired into the side netting from an acute angle.
In a bid to add more firepower to the attack, Manchester City U23 coach Brian Barry-Murphy brought on Sodje to replace Oscar Bobb with twenty minutes remaining.
A prolific goalscorer who can operate in multiple positions in attack, Sodje was City U18s top scorer last season with nineteen goals in 22 appearances of which 20 were starts.
He signed a scholarship with City in July 2020 before putting pen to paper on his first professional contract this summer.
Sodje and his Manchester City U23 teammates are next in action against Blackburn Rovers at the Academy Stadium on August 20.
