2021 Super Eagles invitee gives away a penalty as Spurs, Chelsea U23s play out 4-goal thriller
Published: August 17, 2021
Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea shared the spoils with a entertaining 2-2 draw in their opening match of the new Premier League 2 season at the Lamex Stadium (Stevenage, Hertfordshire) on Monday night.
Two players of Nigerian descent were on parade, with 2021 Super Eagles invitee goalkeeper Joshua Oluwayemi and Flying Eagles hopeful Bryan Fiabema starting for Tottenham and Chelsea respectively.
The Blues were 2-0 up in the first half courtesy of Harvey Vale's brace but unexpectedly Spurs were back in it with second half goals from Markanday and Bennett.
Nineteen minutes into the game, the young Blues were awarded a deserved penalty as Vale was taken out by Oluwayemi in the six-yard box.
Despite the complaints of the Nigerian and with no VAR in Premier League 2, the referee stood by his decision.
He didn't make amends for his rash challenge as Vale dusted himself down and converted the penalty.
Fiabema, who was the focal point as the Blues leading striker in a 3-4-3 formation, didn't make much impact and was substituted with ten minutes left on the clock.
Chelsea U23s have a four-day wait before their next fixture against Shola Shoretire's Manchester United, while Spurs face Leeds United on August 23.
