Everton are through to the third round of the competition after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Championship opponents Huddersfield Town at John Smith's Stadium.

Manager Rafael Benitez made nine changes to the squad, with Nigeria international Alex Iwobi one of two players that retained his place in the starting line-up.

The Hale End Academy graduate opened the scoring with a simple finish from eight yards out after he was played in by Tom Davies.

Iwobi's goal was cancelled out by Tom Lees with a header on the stroke of half-time before Andros Townsend fired the Toffees back in front with eleven minutes remaining.

Joining Everton in the next round is Wycombe Wanderers who defeated Stevenage on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time at the Lamex Stadium.

Making his first start of the season, veteran striker Adebayo Akinfenwa slotted home after a deflection fell kindly to him in the 23rd minute.

Elliott List and Jamie Reid found the net to put the home team 2-1 up before Tjay De Barr headed home in second half injury time to send the game to penalties.

At the Dunes Hotel Stadium (Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria), Aston Villa hammered League Two team Barrow 6-0.

After two appearances off the bench, 17-year-old midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka made his starting debut for Aston Villa and lasted 73 minutes on the pitch before making way for his elder brother Caleb.

Caleb arrived at Aston Villa last week and tonight's clash was his first appearance for the Premier League club.

Aston Villa secured a big win courtesy of a hat-trick from Cameron Archer, an Anwar El Ghazi brace and Frederic Guilbert's effort.
