Manchester United reveal two Nigeria-eligible players shirt numbers for EFL Trophy campaign
Published: August 25, 2021English Premier League giants Manchester United through their official website revealed the shirt numbers their U21 players will be wearing for this season's Papa John's Trophy campaign on Tuesday, same day they faced League One side Lincoln City in their opening match of the competition.
Two attackers of Nigerian descent in the shape of England youth international Shola Shoretire and Netherlands youth teamer Dillon Hoogewerf have been assigned squad numbers.
Shoretire was allocated the number 47 before the start of the season and he has kept the number for the EFL Trophy campaign, while Hoogewerf will play with the number 65 on the back of his jersey.
The Anglo-Nigerian has switched to a lower number after wearing number 74 in 2020-2021.
Manchester United have not revealed the shirt number first year scholar Maximilano Oyedele will wear for the EFL Trophy even though he is eligible to represent the club in the competition.
Shoretire and Hoogewerf were named in the starting line-up as Manchester United U21s were defeated 3-2 by Lincoln City at LNER Stadium.
The League One club led 3-0 at minute 57 thanks to a hat-trick from Anthony Scully before Charlie McNeill reduced the deficit after a smart pass from Shoretire in the 68th minute.
