Bassey ruled out of Glasgow Rangers' Europa League play-off tie vs Alashkert
Published: August 25, 2021Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey will not be involved when Glasgow Rangers take on Armenian champions Alashkert in a Europa League play-off tie against Alashkert on Thursday afternoon.
Sky Sports says manager Steven Gerrard and six players including Bassey have not traveled to Armenia following a COVID-19 outbreak at the club.
The Scottish champions stated on Tuesday that they received positive COVID-19 tests in the latest round of testing, adding that those identified as positive are now in self isolation along with close contacts.
Nigeria internationals Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun were among the players that traveled to Yerevan.
Bassey's omission is a big blow for the Light Blues as he has earned rave reviews for his performances in his last two matches, both of which he went the distance.
Croatia international Borna Barisic was among the group who traveled and could replace Bassey at left-back.
In the first meeting at Ibrox Stadium, Rangers eked out a slender 1-0 win over Alashkert despite playing with ten men for the whole of the second half following the dismissal of John Lundstram.
