Super Eagles-eligible winger on target as Southampton thump Newport County 8-0
Published: August 25, 2021
Southampton demolished League Two opponents Newport County 8-0 on Wednesday night to advance to the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Saints boss Ralph Hasenhüttl handed a start to Super Eagles-eligible winger Nathan Tella while Southampton B captain Oludare Olufunwa was not among the group who traveled to Wales.
Broja, on his debut, opened the scoring in the ninth minute, converting a rebound after Nathan Redmond's shot bounced off the crossbar.
Tella and Walker-Peters were on the scoresheet to give the visitors a 3-0 lead at half-time.
The former Arsenal schoolboy picked out the bottom corner to double Southampton's advantage after he was found by Elyounoussi in the 25th minute.
Further strikes followed after the interval from Elyounoussi (3), Broja and Nathan Redmond.
Michael Obafemi, who can switch eligibility to Nigeria as from November 20, 2021 if he does not add to his solitary Republic of Ireland cap, came off the bench to replace Tella in the 65th minute.
Timmy Abraham, younger brother of former Chelsea striker Tammy, went the full ninety for Newport County.
