Borussia Dortmund's teenage German-Nigerian CB reveals why he turned down Chelsea
Published: December 22, 2021
Promising Borussia Dortmund central defender Nnamdi Collins has confirmed that Chelsea were interested in his signature before he extended his contract at the Bundesliga club in 2020.
The Germany youth international of Nigerian descent says he turned down a move to Stamford Bridge because he felt comfortable at Dortmund, whom he joined from Fortuna Düsseldorf in 2016.
Although Collins passed up the opportunity to join Chelsea last year, the highly-rated teenager has admitted that he would love to play in the English top-flight in future, labeling the Premier League 'the best league in the world'.
Collins, who is predominantly a center-back, has goalscoring qualities as well, which is not surprising considering that he started his career as a striker.
So far, he has netted five goals in 28 appearances combined for Borussia Dortmund's youth teams in the league and set up three goals for his teammates.
Asked how close he was to joining Chelsea, Collins told The Secret Scout : "That’s right. They were very interested. In any case it was out of the question for me and Dortmund was always my first option.
"I feel very comfortable here. For sure, the Premier League is a league where I want to play one day. It’s the best league in the world.
"However, I’m firmly convinced that it was the right decision to stay here in Dortmund and I’m looking forward to the coming years."
The 2004-born Collins made his unofficial debut for Borussia Dortmund's first team in a pre-season friendly against Sparta Rotterdam back in September 2020.
