Onuoha reckons Manchester City's win vs Arsenal has put pressure on Chelsea, Liverpool
Published: January 01, 2022
Nigerian-born former Manchester City center-back Nedum Onuoha believes that Manchester City's come-from-behind win over Arsenal in a Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium on New Year's Day has put pressure on nearest challengers Chelsea and Liverpool.
The result sees Pep Guardiola's team open up an eleven-point gap at the top of the Premier League table but they have played one game more than Chelsea while Liverpool have two games in hand.
Arthur Okonkwo and striker Folarin Balogun remain out of favour as they were not considered for the visit of the Citizens.
After they were denied a penalty early on, the Gunners finally got the breakthrough just past the half hour mark as one-time Nigerian Federation target Bukayo Saka swept the ball past Ederson from inside the area.
Riyad Mahrez converted from the spot to make it 1-1 on 57 minutes and it seemed both teams had settled for a point but Rodri slotted the winner past Aaron Ramsdale in stoppage time.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Onuoha stated : "It is 11 wins in a row. City did something similar at the turn of last year and I think the stat is Pep Guardiola has won 10 league games in a row four times.
"Sir Alex Ferguson is next on the list with two. When City get like this, other teams struggle to match them and gaps form.
"For [Chelsea and Liverpool] playing tomorrow, knowing they have to win just to stay afloat, that is a different type of pressure. You worry about City on their best day."
Onuoha totaled 188 Premier League appearances combined for three different clubs Manchester City, Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers, scoring four goals.
