FAYC: Nigeria-eligible striker nets winner for Chelsea in seven-goal thriller vs Liverpool
Published: January 30, 2022
Chelsea have booked their place in the quarterfinals of the prestigious FA Youth Cup after edging out Liverpool in a seven-goal thriller on Saturday evening.
No player of Nigerian descent made Liverpool's matchday squad; 2019 Golden Eaglets invitee Prince Adegoke started for the Blues while teammates Tudor Mendel-Idowu and Derrick Abu were on the bench.
Liverpool looked the better side for an hour and were 3-0 up courtesy of efforts from Luke Chambers, Kaide Gordon and Oakley Cannonier, only for the visitors to stage a dramatic comeback late in the game.
Charlie Webster, with a goal from 25 yards out, reduced the deficit in the 70th minute and Soonsup-Bell nodded in for 3-2 with thirteen minutes remaining before Mothersille completed the comeback in the 87th minute.
On as a substitute in the 85th minute, Mendel-Idowu poked the ball home after stretching to meet a cross from Mothersille in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
In doing so, the 17-year-old took his goal contribution for Chelsea U18s to ten (5 goals, 5 assists) for the season.
