Premier League 2 : Shoretire helps Manchester United beat Chelsea at Old Trafford
Published: April 08, 2022
Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League 2 on Friday evening, beating Chelsea 1-0 at Old Trafford in their penultimate home game of the 2021-2022 season.
England youth international of Nigerian descent Shola Shoretire, who started in midfield in a 5-3-2 formation, played the full ninety for the Red Devils and his teammate, newly-capped Poland U18 international Maxi Oyedele was a non-playing substitute.
Mellor, wearing the captain's armband, had United's first chance to break the deadlock but his shot went over the bar in the eighth minute, before Shoretire's effort was blocked.
Manchester United's dominance eventually paid off as Alejandro Garnacho tapped in a pull back from Mellor in the 36th minute.
In the second half, it was still one-way traffic with Noam Emeran's free-kick tipped onto the crossbar and Shoretire's header saved.
The Anglo-Nigerian was shown a yellow card, his tenth of the season in all competitions, in the 27th minute.
Chelsea are second from bottom in the Premier League 2 standings with 22 points accumulated from twenty two matches and United are fourth with 38 points from 24 games.
