Jose Peseiro's coaching style after four games analysed, from the known to unknown
Published: June 16, 2022
Jose Peseiro has led the Super Eagles into four games with two of them being competitive. The first two were a loss while the last two have been victories with one being a record-breaking one.
The Portuguese manager has started off well in his job as Nigeria coach but being that he is still relatively new, his coaching style is still a little bit clouded in mystery.
Allnigeriasoccer.com's tactical team will be analysing the Portuguese manager's coaching style from the known to the unknown.
Known
Attack minded manager: Peseiro is a quite attacking manager who loves his team to be on the attack at the slightest opportunity.
Flexible: While it pays long-term to have a set game style, flexibility is important especially when it comes to international football.
Peseiro is quite flexible with the Portuguese flipping between systems at ease. Whether it is as a result of him being new or not, he is flexible.
Two-Striker System: Peseiro has made it known since his debut as Super Eagles manager that he favours featuring two strikers in the same line-up.
Unknown
Tactical style (Route one) : The route one style is a brand of football that is based on skipping the build-up phase of a team and focusing on getting the ball into the opposition box as quickly as possible.
It is mainly utilised when a team does not have the tools to match the opposition in midfield. Against Mexico, Ecuador and to some extent Sierra Leone (changed in the second half when Etebo came in), Peseiro's team played route one football for long periods.
Only against Sao Tome and Principe who have lesser quality players was the approach changed fully.
Maybe when Peseiro gets to understand his team better, he may settle on a more expansive tactical style.
Technical coaching style : We have seen Iwobi being utilised in the deep-lying playmaker role and flourishing.
The players are holding on to the ball better, the passing has improved massively and line-breaking passes are more accurate. This is down to Peseiro's coaching as more emphasis is laid on the technical aspects of the game.
Mixed Pressing system : The pressing system utilised by Peseiro has been a mixture between a high-press, mid-press and low-press. Against Mexico, the mid-press was utilised and later changed into a low-press.
The Ecuador game was different as the team transitioned from a high-press to a low-press in different situations.
Direct playing style : There have been few automated mechanisms in Peseiro's setup. The playing has been direct with players like Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, Bassey and Osimhen flourishing.
No complicated passing sequences yet which may change as things go on.
Verdict
Peseiro is a cross between traditional and modern managers. He is quite similar to Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte. Adaptive coaches who love to attack but do so at minimal risk of defensive solidity.
The Portuguese manager may change some of his coaching approaches with time as he gets to know his team better.
