'Once a Ger, always a Ger' - Super Eagles star pays tribute to Rangers players, fans after Ajax move
Published: July 20, 2022
Calvin Bassey has taken to social media to pay tribute to his former teammates at Glasgow Rangers as well as the fans of the Scottish Premiership giants after completing his move to Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam on Wednesday.
The Leicester City academy product has now become the most expensive Nigerian defender in history, surpassing Taribo West, with Ajax agreeing an initial fee of 23 million euros with the Light Blues.
Bassey is also the most expensive player sold by Rangers in their history, beating the record previously held by Nathan Patterson, who moved to Goodison Park in the January transfer window for 11.5 million pounds plus add-ons.
The 22-year-old has signed a five-year contract with Ajax Amsterdam, and with that he ended a two-year association with Rangers that saw him make 65 all-competition appearances for the club, and win the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup.
Signed as a raw talent from Leicester City, Bassey developed into one of the best young left-sided defenders in Europe in his final season at Rangers, leading to a scramble for his signature this summer.

Writing on Twitter, Bassey stated : "Where do I start?
"Firstly, I just want to thank God for giving me this opportunity to play for a club that is as historic and amazing as Rangers.
"I want to thank the manager and the coaching staff.
"For the trust they put in me and for helping me to develop both as a person and a player.
"I want to thank my teammates for all their help. I came here to play football but I'm leaving with brothers for life.
"I want to thank all the fans. You were truly incredible. I've never experienced anything like Ibrox.
"You will always have a place in my heart - once a Ger, always a Ger.
"Finally, I wish the team all the best and plenty of success for the future.
