Barcelona striker Oshoala named CAF POTY (Women) for a record fifth time

Barcelona's Nigeria international striker Asisat Oshoala has been named the CAF Player of the Year (Women) for a record fifth time.

The former Liverpool and Arsenal star saw off competition from Ajara Nchout Njoya (Cameroon & Internazionale Milano) and Grace Chanda (Zambia & BIIK Kazygurt) to win the prestigious accolade.

Prior to Thursday's Awards Gala in Rabat, Morocco, Oshoala's awards in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2019 placed her joint-top along with another Super Falcons legend Perpetua Nkwocha.

Despite her injury struggles, the 2021-2022 season was a stellar one for Oshoala as she claimed the Spanish Primera Division Pichichi award with 20 goals in nineteen appearances.

The 27-year-old also demonstrated her nose for goal in the UEFA Champions League, where she scored against her former employers Arsenal, and the Copa de la Reina by finding the net against Real Madrid.

A pacy and physical striker, Oshoala was in the Nigeria squad to the ongoing Women's Africa Cup of Nations but suffered an injury in the opener against South Africa that ruled her out of the rest of the tournament.

Bayern Munich's Senegal striker Sadio Mane took home the CAF Player of the Year (Men) ahead of his former Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
