Ajax 4 Rangers 0 : Dream Champions League debut for Bassey against his former club
Published: September 07, 2022
Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey made his UEFA Champions League debut for Ajax Amsterdam as they hammered his former club Glasgow Rangers 4-0 on Wednesday evening.
The Dutch Eredivisie giants went in front in the 17th minute courtesy of a goal from Edson Alvarez.
Ajax continued to push for their second of the evening, and eventually got it in the 32nd minute.
Ghanaian star Mohammed Kudus combined with Steven Berghuis to extend the lead of the hosts.
Bassey got into the mix as he assisted Kudus to score Ajax's third goal in the 33rd minute.
At halftime, Alfred Schreuder's men were already cruising and waiting to seal their first win of the 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League.
Despite having a huge halftime lead, Ajax never took their feet off the pedal. They controlled the game and created numerous goal scoring chances.
Rangers thought they had got one back through Borna Barisic but a VAR interference denied them the goal.
Steven Bergwijn completed the rout ten minutes before the end of regulation time.
Bassey joined the Son of the Gods in July 2022 from Rangers and has made five appearances in all competitions for the four-time European champions.
